Premature Aging: Myths about SPF
What is the number one reason for premature aging? Sun exposure. While other lifestyle factors such as smoking, poor diet, alcohol consumption and stress can contribute to a lackluster complexion and the early arrival of fine lines and wrinkles, sunlight is the biggest player in the premature aging game. Sun can also bring out dark spots and other skin discolorations, which can make us look older than we actually are. With the arrival of summer, it’s time to dispel a few sun myths that can leave your skin unnecessarily exposed.
Myth #1. “It’s cloudy, so I can’t get a sunburn”
Although you may not see the sun, the sun sees you. In fact, up to 80% of the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays can slip effortlessly through a cloud-covered sky and penetrate your skin. The sun’s rays can also pass through the windows of your car, office, and home. So even if you don’t feel the heat, UV radiation could be reaching your skin and causing cellular damage.
Myth #2. “I like to sunbathe and tan, but I am very careful not to burn.”
Unfortunately, it is not just an uncomfortable sunburn that is a threat to healthy skin. Prolonged exposure and tanning can also take a serious toll on skin, leaving it dry, leathery and more susceptible to damage and certain kinds of skin cancer. Even individuals with darker skin are not immune from the powerful effects of the sun. In addition, our everyday sun exposure adds up and, over time, we can see the cumulative aging effect that ultraviolet radiation has on our skin.
Myth #3. “All sunscreens are greasy and will cause my skin to break out.”
The days of heavy greasy sunscreens are a thing of the past. Most of today’s sun protecting products are very safe to use on sensitive skin–especially those that have been specifically formulated for the face. It is important to protect your skin on daily basis throughout the year with sunscreen or an SPF-containing moisturizer or cosmetic foundation. If you have sensitive skin or are prone to breakouts, you should select a product that is non-comedogenic and gentle on the face. To best shield, your skin, choose a product with an SPF of at least 30 and reapply it every couple of hours.
For a non-irritating line of products, try ZO skin care formulations. Their mild and lightweight SPF products blend evenly into the skin and can even act as primers for makeup. Enriched with vitamin A, C, and E, the ZO daily power defense serum actively helps repair the skin while also repelling UV rays.
