IPL

Intense pulsed light (IPL) is a breakthrough therapy to treat hyperpigmentation. With a quick, safe and effective treatment, IPL fades sunspots, freckles and blotchy pigmentation, leaving you with an even skin tone, with no need to take time out from your busy schedule to recover.

What is IPL?

Our Lumecca IPL device from Inmode uses a broad spectrum of wavelengths of light to gently restore an area of your skin. The light energy enters skin layers, reaching the melanin (the brown pigment in your freckles and dark spots). IPL heats and destroys the melanin, which is then shed naturally. While treating your hyperpigmentation, IPL also stimulates the skin’s fibroblasts, a specialized type of cell that produces collagen and regulates wound healing. The production of fresh, natural collagen leaves you with smoother skin, refines your pores and softens wrinkles and lines in the most natural way.

Who is a Candidate?

IPL treatments are the ideal treatment if you see the signs of sun-damaged skin and want to be left with an even skin tone. Fair skin typically responds best to IPL, and very dark-skinned people are not candidates for IPL. You may be a candidate for IPL if you have any of the following:

  • Dark freckles
  • Sun spots
  • Blotchy freckles or irregular pigmentation
  • Melasma
  • Broken capillaries

What are the Benefits of IPL?

Sun damage and hyperpigmentation leave you looking older and less appealing. When your facial skin is free from hyperpigmentation and photodamage, you will see a remarkable improvement in your overall appearance. The added benefits of IPL enhance its anti-aging effects. The main target is hyperpigmentation and sun damage, but IPL treatments boast several additional benefits:

  • Improves the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
  • Minimizes large pores
  • Reduces rosacea and broken capillaries
  • Can improve acne and acne scars
  • Reduces skin redness
  • Boosts collagen and elastin production
  • Can be used on face, neck and chest
  • Gentle treatment that causes minimal damage to your skin
  • There is no downtime, and makeup can be applied immediately after your IPL treatment

Before Your IPL Treatment

treatment to achieve your aesthetic goals. If IPL is advised, your appointment will be scheduled. IPL works best on fair skin, so avoid tanning or sun exposure for several weeks before your treatment, including tanning beds and tanning creams. During the weeks leading up to your treatment, avoid any skin products containing vitamin A acids, such as Retin-A, Accutane and alpha-hydroxy acids. Dr. Westreich will ensure you are prepared and understand how to get the most out of your IPL treatment.

What to Expect

Dr. Westreich will begin by providing protective eye shields, and then applying a cool gel to the treatment area. He will then initiate treatment with the IPL system. Your treatment will take approximately 20 to 30 minutes. Moisturizer and sunscreen are applied immediately after your IPL treatment.

What to Expect After an IPL Treatment?

After your IPL treatment is complete, you are free to return to your regular activities. For a few hours, you will probably experience some patchiness or skin redness, usually resembling a mild sunburn. Your sun spots and freckles will initially appear darker. This is a good sign that the broken-down melanin is rising to the surface of your skin. After three to seven days, the darker areas will begin to flake off, revealing fresh new skin beneath. For best results, avoid touching or picking at the treated area, moisturize frequently, and ensure you protect your skin from the sun.

How Much Will My Treatment Cost?

You may achieve the results you want after one session, but for most people, three to six treatments will produce optimal results, depending on the severity of the skin flaws being addressed. The series of IPL treatments are performed at about one-month intervals. The cost of your IPL treatment will depend on the size of the area being treated, as well as the number of IPL treatments you need. During your initial consultation, Dr. Westreich will advise you of the number of treatments needed to achieve the results you envision.
