Some of us were born with what could be termed a “weak” chin. Others may have noticed that as the years have progressed, our chin and jawline seem to have become more slack and less pronounced. Age-related skin laxity, declining muscle tone, and an accumulation of fat can begin to obscure the lines and angles of a youthful jawline. Whether is it an inherited trait or a tell-tale sign of the aging process, an under-pronounced chin and jaw can have a significant impact on the overall composition of the face. This is a common complaint among our NYC patients, who desire an elegantly contoured neck area to complement their toned physique.
Neck liposuction procedure overview
A neck lift is a surgical procedure that is performed to restore neck definition by tightening underlying muscles and removing excess fat and skin. Fatty deposits that build up in the neck and chin area are not likely to respond to diet or exercise. Neck liposuction can provide a more youthful, defined appearance by removing excess fat from under the chin and along the neck. It is more invasive than liposuction and requires a longer recovery period. Neck lifts are recommended for older patients with poor skin elasticity, or patients who have lost a great deal of weight who suffer from loose, hanging skin on the neck and under the chin. In some cases, Dr. Westreich may recommend a combination of neck liposuction to remove underlying fat and a neck lift to tighten the skin.
Ideal candidates for liposuction
Ideal candidates for neck liposuction are those who are generally happy with their appearance, but desire a more graceful, sculpted neckline and/or wish to reduce submental fullness. Neck liposuction should only be performed on patients who have good skin elasticity, which will allow the skin to shrink down around the new shape of the neck once the fat is removed. Neck liposuction works best on those whose skin is not overly lax but have moderate amounts of submental (under the chin) fat. For firm, even results, the skin must be able to rebound and contract after the fat is removed. Before performing the procedure, Dr. Westreich will assess your skin’s elasticity. Candidates for neck liposuction are typically younger than 50. Dr. Westreich may recommend an alternative treatment to patients who no longer have good skin elasticity.
Neck liposuction vs neck lift

Are there non-invasive neck tightening procedures?
There are several different kinds of non-invasive tightening treatments. Of those, radiofrequency treatments that heat up the collagen underneath the skin are amongst the safest and most effective treatments. Radiofrequency can also be used to melt fat, using a slightly deeper treatment strategy. Even more important is that it is safe for all skin types and colors. Patients with mild to moderate neck skin laxity and mild to moderate submental fat are excellent candidates for this type of treatment.
What happens during a neck liposuction procedure?
To begin the procedure, Dr. Westreich will prepare the treatment area with an anesthetizing solution that helps break down fat cells. Through a 2mm incision below the chin and, occasionally underneath the earlobes, Dr. Westreich will then carefully insert a small tube (a cannula) through which fat can be uniformly drawn out. A skilled hand at neck liposuction, Dr. Westreich will accurately and efficiently suction out the fat, using a technique that reduces the chance of uneven contouring and other imperfections.
Recovery following neck liposuction
After the surgery, you will be required to wear a compression bandage to support your neck and chin during your recovery. You may need to wear this for up to one week to encourage healing and minimize swelling and bruising. The bruising and swelling following neck liposuction can be significant, so many patients choose to rest at home for the first few days. Once you feel ready to get out of the house, you can use makeup or a scarf to hide any lingering bruising. Within two weeks of your surgery, the majority of swelling and bruising will have dissipated and you will be able to see the results of the procedure.
