Our Laser Treatments

New Face NY currently offers three primary laser platforms, each suited to different skin concerns, depths of treatment, and recovery preferences:

  • Lase MD — a fractionated Thulium laser best suited for pigment disorders, melasma, texture, and pore refinement with minimal downtime
  • Erbium Resurfacing — a full-field laser ideal for fine lines, deeper wrinkles, and significant surface renewal
  • Profractional (Fractionated Erbium) — a targeted, fractionated option for skin tightening, scar improvement, and texture with faster healing than full-field resurfacing

As a patient, it can be difficult to understand all of the different lasers, but don’t be fooled with branding and marketing. In the most basic sense, the depth of the treatment and the density of treatment (fractionated vs. full field) determine the effect of the laser. With similar settings, different devices will give the same outcome. Our lasers are chosen for their versatility and results that improve upon other services we currently offer.

Lase MD: Thulium Laser for Pigment and Texture

Lase MD is a Thulium laser operating at 1927nm — a wavelength that penetrates precisely to the dermal layer where pigment accumulates. Unlike CO2 and Erbium lasers, Thulium technology generates significantly less heat, making it one of the safest options available for patients with darker skin tones, including Fitzpatrick types IV and above.

Because Lase MD is a fractionated laser, it treats a controlled percentage of skin per session rather than removing the entire surface layer. This means meaningful skin renewal with a gentler recovery. Each session improves skin texture, reduces the appearance of fine lines, shrinks pores, and addresses pigment concerns — including melasma, one of the more challenging pigment conditions to treat.

Typical downtime for Lase MD is 3–4 days per session, depending on your skin type and the parameters set by your provider. A series of 3–4 treatments spaced approximately 6 weeks apart is standard.

The Moxi laser is another well-known Thulium-based device; Lase MD operates on the same foundational technology.

Erbium Resurfacing: Full-Field Skin Renewal

Erbium resurfacing is a full-field laser treatment, meaning the entire outer layer of skin is treated and removed to a controlled depth during a single session. This makes it particularly effective for fine lines, uneven texture, and deeper wrinkles — especially those around the mouth that are resistant to other treatments.

At New Face NY, we chose Erbium over CO2 resurfacing for a straightforward reason: it offers the same depth of treatment with a better safety profile. Patients experience less post-procedural redness and a lower risk of hyperpigmentation — an important consideration, especially for patients with medium to darker skin tones.

Erbium resurfacing can be performed at virtually any depth, and your provider will work with you to align the treatment intensity with your goals and your available recovery time. Options include:

  • Nanopeels (under 10 microns) — minimal downtime, subtle surface refresh
  • Microlaser Peels (under 50 microns) — 2–4 days of recovery, improved texture and tone
  • Medium-Depth Peels (up to 100 microns) — 2–7 days of recovery, more significant improvement in texture and pigment
  • Single-Session Deep Resurfacing — 7–10 days of recovery, best for deeper wrinkles and more pronounced surface concerns

Superficial Erbium treatments are frequently combined with fractional therapies to maximize skin tightening and stimulate deeper dermal remodeling in a single visit.

Profractional Laser: Targeted Skin Tightening and Scar Improvement

The Profractional Erbium laser is a fractionated device like Lase MD. It treats a targeted percentage of skin per session rather than the full surface. This approach reduces recovery time and allows the skin to heal faster, making it an excellent option for patients who want meaningful results with a more manageable downtime.

Profractional lasers can penetrate up to 1.5mm deep, though treatments are most commonly performed in the 150–200 micron range to balance results with recovery. Key benefits include skin tightening, pigment reduction, improved texture, and — notably — scar improvement, including surgical scars, traumatic scars, and acne scars.

A series of 3–4 sessions is typically recommended for optimal results. Profractional treatments are frequently combined with Microlaser Peels during the same appointment to amplify the effect of each session.

The Profractional laser, when used for deeper treatments is similar to a Fraxel device. When used for lighter purposes, it is similar to a Clear and Brilliant treatment.

Lasers vs. Chemical Peels: What's the Difference?

Patients often ask how laser treatments compare to chemical peels. The honest answer: the line between them can be subtle, and both are valuable tools — the right choice depends on your skin type, goals, and tolerance for downtime.

Here's how they generally compare:

Chemical Peels

  • Can be performed to specific depths, similar to lasers
  • Recovery is typically shorter than a laser at comparable depth, because no heat is generated, so less redness results
  • Superior for certain types of dark spots (excluding melasma) in select patients
  • Most chemical peels — with the exception of Cosmelan — are not appropriate for Fitzpatrick types IV and above
  • Provide less skin tightening than laser treatments

Laser Treatments

  • Generally produce better resolution of wrinkles and skin laxity
  • More effective for melasma and heat-responsive pigment conditions
  • Carry a slightly higher risk of temporary post-treatment pigmentation issues due to heat
  • Safe across a wider range of skin tones when the correct device is selected

During your consultation at our Upper East Side practice, your provider will help you determine which approach is best suited to your skin and your goals.

Schedule a Laser Skin Consultation in New York City

If you're ready to explore laser skin treatments in NYC, Dr. Westreich's team is here to help you find the right path forward. Contact New Face NY today to schedule your personalized consultation at our Manhattan practice.

An important note for patients with darker skin: All of our lasers can be used safely on light and dark skin tones. Patients with darker skin (Fitzpatrick types IV and above) should pretreat with a bleaching agent — typically 4% hydroquinone — for a minimum of two weeks before and two weeks after treatment to reduce the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
